Asbestos reported in Nottingham

Nottingham City Council tenants living in defective homes riddled with asbestos say they have been let down by the council. At least 70 tenants living in Newland Homes – built as temporary accommodation for soldiers and their families after the Second World War – say they have waited a decade for their properties to be renovated. Tenants have even been warned against using drills because of the asbestos risk.

They have now been told they will have the work done this year, but only £30,000 will be spent on each house – instead of the £100,000 spent on other similar properties. Jennifer Deakin, 60, of Brindley Road, Bilborough, said:

“I am disgusted. We have waited all this time. And we are still paying the same rent. Now they say they haven’t got enough money left to do the job properly. Our lives are on hold.”

Concrete panels, which form the outer walls of the houses, are rotting, water leaks into some homes and walls are cracking. A Nottingham City Homes survey found the internal walls have panels made of amosite, also known as “brown” asbestos. Coun Alan Clark said the council wanted to achieve better value for money and improved thermal efficiency of the homes. It also wanted to complete the work without moving tenants out. He said anyone concerned about asbestos should contact Nottingham City Homes.
